Hello all! It's me again^^;

Today I present to you all: a bunch of links. I've been writing and writing on my blog, and it's finally occurred to me I should share some of it in a place where the right audience is more likely to see.

First of all, if you like fanifestos I wrote one for Angelique, the first otome game ever and its sequels. I spent a long time on it, so it'd be nice if it got more eyes on it. (I need to update the fansite too... But I think I'd make another post here when that's ready, if that's okay.)

At the final heart-shaped bullet point in this post full of links I talk about an R18 simulation-RPG-VN-wombo-combo otome game, that'll be dropping next year by an (indie??) dev group. I find it super interesting, so I want to get the news out there. There's also a follow-up post where I share that the game will be getting an English translation, and more info surrounding that.

A website for my games recs/reviews.

You can filter for dating sims with the romance and visual novel tags, and then for like...gender options, whether it's free, the emotional tone etc. There's about 30 otome-ish games.

Hakuoki is the game of the month and also my favourite otome!

When I started playing I wasn't expecting to like it at all, since I had never really cared much for historical RPF or samurai, and I started making a reaction post poking fun at it...which turned into a documentation of my INCREASING OBSESSION and now I am 100% HERE FOR ALL OF IT.

Especially the sexy vampires, an aspect I had not osmosed. Takes a while to get there, though, be ready for a lot of kinda dry historical exposition about the politics of 19th century Japan, I initially found this boring but now I'll ramble at anyone who'll listen about how FASCINATING it all is. Especially when you add vampires, which are a METAPHOR for COLONIALISM and TOXIC MASCULINITY and also VERY HOT.

And asides from all that the story is engaging, the boys are cute and lovable and varied, and the romances are really sweet. The historical background is tragic and there's always some element of bittersweet regret, but the good ends are still heartwarming and optimistic.

If you're interested here's all my reaction posts, plus a character list with pictures.

The Kyoto Winds/Edo Blossoms bundle (you want both, it's basically one game) is currently 70% off on Steam for $12 Australian, so like $8 US.

Some new games have just been announced just as I bought a Switch myself :D

Cafe Enchante US Fall 2020
When Kotone inherits her grandfather’s Tokyo café, she discovers the shop holds more secrets than anyone could imagine.

Piofore Memories US Fall 2020
Liliana Adoronato was born and raised in the church in the center of the Italian town of Burlone. Three criminal organizations control parts of the city, and Lili discovers that she is literally in the center of their turf wars.

Have any of you played these games? They certainly look pretty. I hope they come out in Australia too (even if I have to wait for our Autumn)

Under the cut: some otome games that are already out on the Switch.

I'm thinking of buying a Nintendo Switch, so I was poking around the store, and came across a few Love365 games. Afaict each game has the first two seasons for 3-6 guys for $25, when (if my maths is right) buying the stories individually via the mobile app costs about that much per guy.

So it's good value if you're a completionist. Which I am not, I'm generally happy playing one guy's first story (about $6, or free if you wait long enough) and then stopping, but YMMV.

It's a timely cause and these are also very good deals.

The Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality is a ridiculously huge collection of games from every genre imaginable, including some great stuff. I listed all the romance games I could see here, I haven't played any of the pure otome but Verdant Skies is a fun and diverse farming sim set in space with cute if minor romances.

SakeVisual is having a 50% sale with all proceeds going to Black Girls Code. I specifically recommend Backstage Pass, it's a surprisingly grounded but entertaining story about a young woman getting into the entertainment industry as a makeup artist, with mostly male but one female love interest.

I've been feeling frustrated at how many dating sims these days are treated like ephemeral Experiences that may vanish suddenly, taking any purchases with them. So to turn that frustration into something positive, here's a bunch of otome games I've enjoyed that you can buy outright, which afaict have no DRM or other control by the company or store.

Since it's the game of the month I decided to make a review post with all the games that are free right now...but alas the current crop are largely not to my taste. Still, maybe they'll be to yours!

Here's a post I made about Voltage/Love365 in general explaining the payment structure and reviewing the games I've played. I've found a few I really like, including Dui from Star-crossed who is free for the next week and a bit.

Note that there's some variation in when these games are free for, and what "free" means.

Irresistible Mistakes: Shunichiro: The protagonist wakes up realising she had a drunken one night stand she can't remember with one of her coworkers. Shunichiro is her cheerfully hedonistic boss, it glossed over the consent issues too much for me but he had a certain skeezy charm. This seems to be permanently free.

Irresistible Mistakes: Yukihasa: a brilliant but emotionless doctor who thinks love is a delusion and just wants to be friends with benefits. I had complicated feelings on him as a character, but the route seemed to be going in a "fix the neuro-atypical person with loving sex" direction. Free for February.

Butler Until Midnight: Yuma: The protagonist finds out she's the daughter of a prestigious man and is bullied into letting a butler train her to be a refined lady. They were so manipulative and mean in the prologue it felt more like a butler themed horror game, but it's probably fun if you like domineering butlers? I've heard there's a lot of fat shaming, though. Yuma is apparently extra mean to start with but becomes nicer. Free for February.

Star-crossed: Dui This is a cute romance with the god of the star-sign Gemini, who has two sides to his personality. Free with ads until February 11.

Destind: Araya: the protagonist matches via a dating app with a younger friend from highschool who's been pining over her. He's rapey and manipulative. It's "Love Choice" which means the good choices, leading to the super happy end, cost money. Normally you'd also have to wait or pay to read the episodes, and that part seems to be permanently free, but unlocking the super happy ending still costs like $30 and even people who liked the route gave it a low score for the poor value for money.

I posted a bit more detail over on my dreamwidth.

I decided to check out both the Japanese and US Voltage apps (both in English) and had a lot of fun.

Here's my review of the apps in general including discussions of the freemium payment structure etc.

From what I can see, both always have female protagonists, and have "free" romance phone games that encourage you to spend money but you can genuinely have fun with for free by slowly accruing currency or playing free games. They all also have autoplay, so you don't have to click too much.

Voltage USA:
Mildly diverse, has some games with female or even non-binary love interests.
You mostly spend money to avoid inconvenience, and have to go through the same rigmarole to replay episodes.

Voltage Inc:
VERY tropey and heterosexual, like interactive illustrated Harlequin romances.
You generally pay for a route outright, and can replay it at will, but there's some with the "pay to avoid inconvenience" model. Has free games.

And here's the games I played a chunk of:

Love and Legends: Altea Chapter 1 f/f with a cute wizard

"Irresistible Mistakes", mostly Shunichiro m/f after a drunken hookup with a coworker

After School Affairs- Shinichi m/f forbidden affair between teachers. This uptight maths teacher is free for the rest of January.

Here's a series of reaction posts I wrote about the game, and some content warnings.

It's a mystery/romance/drama by Otomate, creators of Hakuoki/Code Realise/Amnesia etc.

I still haven't finished it, I couldn't figure out how to get a good ending for the most recent route I played and was put off by the worry I'd never see a good end again. But I still really enjoyed a lot about it. It's a little more gothic character drama than romance, with one very long common route and shorter romances, many of which are bittersweet, as well as non-romantic endings focussing on the main character working through her issues. Some of the guys are very messed up and even their "best" endings are pretty sad.

The structure is pretty unique, and doesn't quite work: there's a map of scenes that gets unlocked as you play the game and make different choices, and you use this to make different choices and see side scenes. But the link between what choices you make and what scenes get unlocked is sometimes very opaque, even with a walkthrough. There's also a shooting minigame (!) but you can skip that pretty easily if you're clumsy like me.

Anyway, it's a well made game with engaging characters and affecting emotional scenes, and an enjoyable gothic atmosphere. The art and voice acting is good too. I'm glad I played it but it's not for everyone.

XOXO Droplets is a very cute and funny m/f dating sim about dating douchey weirdos. It has a free version with three of the guys, and a paid version with another four full routes and two more short routes. I played all endings of the full version and had a fantastic time (though the two short routes were underwhelming)

Here's the reaction posts I wrote while I was playing, including a more detailed review.

Unlike most Jerk Boyfriend otome, it's not about a nice girl being dominated by Sexy Jerks or Redeeming A Jerk With Love (both perfectly valid genres) It's about an asshole girl finding a jerk who's jerkishness is compatible with hers. They don't become Nice or Normal, they just soften in subtle and believable ways as they become closer. As a socially awkward weirdo myself I found this heart-warming :)

"Lovable asshole" characters walk a fine line between "Too assholeish to like" and "not actually an asshole", they worked for me but Steam is full of bad reviews from players who found the jerks TOO jerky.

While I found the romances convincing and sweet, it's kind of emotionally understated, without even onscreen kisses. Also the life management aspects are boring and repetitive and add very little to the game, thankfully you can largely skip them with cheats.

One thing it does especially well is three dimensional characters with complex relationships between each other, not just with the heroine. Also it's enjoyable diverse, including multiple canonically queer LIs.

Anyway, if Daria-esque highschool comedy and romances with lovable jerks sounds like your jam, give it a shot!

I thought it would be fun to look at the top 10 rated otome on Steam and itchio, and see which I've played, and ask if you folk have played them yourselves.

I don't think we've ever discussed this, and I'm curious!

So: do you have an outright favourite love interest from the games you've played? Are there kinds of love interest you tend to be drawn to? Is it just about the character for you, or does it depend more on the romance arc/how the LI interacts with the specific protagonist etc?

Speaking for myself:

While the nature of the protagonist affects how much I enjoy the story overall, and how well I think the relationships work, I seem to always be drawn to the same types regardless.

I'm always a sucker for dark hair, emotional incoherence, and self hatred. In terms of arc I am a huge fan of the sort of slow burn dumbass mutual pining where by the end they OBVIOUSLY love each other but are both too self doubting to realise and it's RIDICULOUS and AMAZING.

I'm also generally drawn to cold/kuudere characters, tsunderes and science nerds. I generally love any trope more with girls, but am a big fan of younger/subby guys, as long as the protagonist doesn't feel like his mother. (I haven't seen enough non binary love interests to know what I like there!)

I'm terrible at picking specific faves, but some I've really loved:
Saito from Hakuoki: dark haired self hating kuudere
Matthew from Backstage Pass: shy sad pretty boy
Ellen from Magical Diary: girl who applies science nerdery to magic
Victor from Code Realize: Shy self hating scientist

What about you?

I just finished Kazuya's route for this. It's a phone-based dating sim, a prequel to Hakuoki set 300 years earlier, but can be played as a stand alone game. It's set during the end of the Warring States/Sengoku period of Japan in the early 17th century.

The heroine, Yukina, is a ninja bodyguard to a demon princess, and chieftan of a demon clan in her own right. The princess has gathered the leaders of Japan's demons to ask them an important question, and Yukina finds herself drawn into human politics... and also drawn to one of the other demon chieftains.

The love interests. From left to right: Senkimaru, Kazuya, Chitose, Kazutake, and Shin
The love interests of Demon's Bond. Senkimaru is androgynous with shoulder-length white hair, turquoise-colored eyes, and an enigmatic smile. Kazuya short black hair, amethyst-colored eyes, and a cool expression. Chitose has short light brown hair, red-colored eyes and a determined smile. Kazutake has short chocolate brown-colored hair, green-colored eyes and a smile between aggressive and energetic. Shin Shiranui has long dark pink hair that is worn in a high ponytail, amber-colored eyes and a smug smile. They're all pale. Senkimaru and Shin are in kimono while the other three are in armour. Kazutake has his shirt open.

The (VERY SHORT) prologue is free but each love interest's route costs $5US. Apparently the routes share some content.

I just played through to the good end for Kazuya, a kuudere. It was great, but I'd rate the proportions as like:
Japanese historical drama: 50%
Anime-esque fantasy nonsense: 20%
Yukina kicking ass: 20%
Romance: 10%

All those parts are done moderately well, but if you're just there for the romance you'll be disappointed. From reviews I've read, the other routes are similar in this respect. Kazuya and Yukina develop a very sweet relationship, but it's more of a shonen-y warrior connection than romance for most for the game.

I didn't love it quite as much as Hakuoki (WHICH I ADORE) but I still enjoyed it a lot, and it has some nice Hakuoki connections lore wise, eg the Princess the protagonist is guarding is an ancestor of Princess Sen.

Here's my reaction posts to the prologue and Kazuya's route

In short: Mystic Messenger is a well made and enjoyable phone based dating sim with some aspects I found annoying.

The protagonist stumbles into the chatroom of a group of friends who run a charity, and ends up getting to know them and helping to organise a big party. The game involves joining group chats, answering emails, messages and phonecalls in real time (not real phonecalls etc, it's simulated within the game) as well as traditional Visual Novel scenes.

Below, from left to right: Jumin, Yoosung, Jaehee, Seven, Zen.
The characters standing under a chandelier. All the characters have medium length hair, although Zen has a long ponytail at the back. Jumin has dark hair and a slight frown and wear a suit. Zen looks up through his white fringe and is wearing a fancy white coat. 707 has a red mop of hair, striped glasses, and is wearing a hoody, tshirt and jeans. Yoosung has pinned back blonde hair and is wearing brightly coloured casual clothes and smiling. Jaehee has brown hair and glasses and is wearing a skirt suit and holding files.

I wrote up my reactions to most of the routes and some of the DLC as I played.

For anyone else who doesn't have a decent phone and has been pining over all the cool otome games only available for phones: Blue Stacks lets you emulate an android phone on a Mac or PC for free.

It's quite easy to install and use. The only real downside is that it makes my Mac laptop run pretty hot. There's other emulators out there but I haven't tried them.

It connects to your Google Play account so it's quite easy to pay for game content. (Almost...too easy)
And now for some game recs! )
