I haven't been playing anything this month and I have nothing to rec, but I did start pondering making a Hakuouki fanvid in the future. That counts, right? :P

I was thinking "Empire" by Beth Crowley would make an excellent song for Sannan in Heisuke's route!

I'm gonna build me an empire
And it's lonely at the top
But madness and greatness
Can both share a face
And nobody will ever convince me to stop

Try (try) to find a chain that I won't break (a chain that I won't break)
A price I wouldn't pay for what I want (for what I want)

It was originally written for Daenerys from Game of Thrones, and I'm actually intrigued by the parallel there, which I hadn't thought of: how both of them have this vision, how both of them want something no one else really wants, and how hard it is to draw the lines between altruism/selfishness and savior/villain with both of them. And how except in his own route, he really is alone.

"I Scare Myself", also by Beth Crowley, is definitely also a Hakuouki song, leaning into the dangerousness of the Shinsengumi and bloodlust. Maybe a Hijikata song?

When everything I touch will break
Loving you is my escape
So come on give me what I crave

Oh, yes! I hadn't thought of how the videos being fannish would have an impact, but it makes perfect sense -- those songs definitely tap into that fannish impulse. (And then I found a third that I'm sure works for some character, in some fandom.)

Especially since she and I apparently both like incredibly angsty conflicted characters feeling intense emotions. :)
